About Lamuko Rent Laws & Our Verification Method

Lamuko Rent Laws is a free reference to U.S. landlord–tenant statutes, starting with security deposits. It is a sister site of Lamuko, which publishes mortgage calculators. We are not a law firm and we don't give legal advice.

How we verify the data

  1. Primary sources only count. A figure is marked confirmed only when we have read it in the statute text itself (the state legislature's or official code site, or the full statute text as published by Justia) or on a state-government page such as an attorney general or housing agency guide. “No statutory cap” and “Not required” are recorded only after we read the state's deposit statute and found no such rule, and we cite the sections checked. Commercial compilations and other websites are used only as leads.
  2. Field by field. Each state's cap, deadline, itemization rule, interest rule and penalty is confirmed separately and stored with its source URL and verification date in our structured data set.
  3. No guessing. If we have not yet confirmed a field, the site shows “Verify with statute”, and calculators do not compute anything from it.
  4. Recent changes first. We check for amendments since 2024 (for example California AB 12 and AB 2801, Illinois P.A. 103-224, Georgia's 2024 cap) and re-check all states every January and July, when many new laws take effect.
  5. Corrections. Email [email protected] with the statute citation, and we will review and date the fix.

Current coverage (Oct 17, 2026)

51 of 51 jurisdictions fully confirmed in all five columns; 51 of 51 return deadlines, 51 penalty rules and 51 caps confirmed in statute text. Local ordinances (for example Seattle, San Francisco or Chicago) are not included in the statewide figures.
